New! Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) for Smoke-free Homes (SFHs) Guide
Current UK NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidance recommends use of NRT for temporary abstinence to avoid exposing others to second-hand smoke exposure. There is also accumulating evidence from Scotland and England to suggest that use of NRT inside the home instead of smoking indoors supports families to reduce children’s second-hand smoke exposure. On this basis, the University of Stirling, NHS Lanarkshire and the University of Glasgow have developed a ‘How to Guide’ for NHS Health Boards in Scotland, should they wish to implement this approach at local level. The guide draws on the design and materials used within a pilot randomised controlled trial (2026) testing the feasibility of this approach in NHS Lanarkshire (Click here for study findings and the study protocol).
