🏠 Smoke-free homes: whose rights are we talking about?
A new Australian study in Tobacco Control examined how smoking and second-hand smoke drift in homes were portrayed in the media between 2015 and 2024.
Interestingly, 61% of articles supported policy change, yet the issue was most often framed as a conflict between individual rights: the right to smoke in your own home versus the right to live free from second-hand smoke. This framing may contribute to policy inaction.
The authors suggest that public health advocacy could benefit from shifting the conversation away from individual rights and towards protecting people, particularly children, from involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke.
